Equality Week 2023 (Oct 2-6)

29 Sep 2023

From the 2nd to the 6th of October UCC will celebrate Equality Week through a series of events highlighting the importance of inclusion, accessibility, and diversity in working towards equality.

For those wishing to immerse themselves in the arts there is a curatorial tour of the Glucksman art gallery focusing on recent commissions in which community groups engaged in creative collaborations with artists. There is also the Kids Art Fest exhibition in the Hub, with artwork from children and young people illustrating their response to this year’s theme, ‘The Human Race’. October is Black History Month in Ireland and the UK and we welcome Elmer Dixon, co-founder of the Black Panther Party in Seattle, to UCC for a reading from his book ‘Die Standing: From Black Panther Revolutionary to Global Diversity Consultant.” There will also be in-person and online workshops, the EDI Soapbox, and the Inclusive UCC Symposium. A very poignant and symbolic event will be the ceremonial tree planting, in collaboration with The Gay Project, at the Rainbow Walkway to mark the 30th anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality in Ireland. In the current societal atmosphere where we see increasing homophobic abuse and attacks it is important to acknowledge the progress that has been made but also to recognise the work that is still to be done to achieve equality.
