Physiology Friday, UCC, 2016

7 Nov 2016

The Department of Physiology, University College Cork celebrated Physiology Friday on October 14th, in conjunction with The Physiological Society, as part of an international series of events during Biology Week.

Building on the success of our event in 2015, we once again enjoyed a fun-filled day that included ECG recordings of passing volunteers and an impressive BioBake sale, showcasing an impressive range of tasty physiological treats, raising more than €600 for MaryMount Hospice. The day’s exciting events began with a public lecture by exercise physiologist Trevor Woods, who incorporated an exercise test demonstration into his informative talk of life as a working physiologist. Trevor’s talk had lessons for the sport enthusiast and wannabe, beyond insight to his work with professional elite athletes. A blitz of short presentations by academic staff, trainees and undergraduate students included entertaining approaches to the dissemination of physiology that included short film, video, poetry, song, puzzle-solving whilst presenting, and a lively talk by final year Physiology class rep on reproductive physiology, a stimulating review of a summer research placement at Cambridge University (cue Mr. Barry White ♫). The day ended with a table-quiz allowing most to flaunt their general ignorance. Physiology Friday 2016 was a great success. Professor Ken O’Halloran, head of department, extended gratitude on behalf of the department to all staff, trainees and students who gave generously of their time and all who helped to contribute to the successful day.
