Dr. Dervla O'Malley and Prof. Ken O'Halloran were recently awarded funding from Muscular Dystrophy Ireland.
The project is titled 'Inflammation in hypoxia-induced exacerbation of respiratory muscle dysfunction in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy'. Hypoxia is a clinical feature of many neuromuscular disorders as a result of respiratory muscle insufficiency. A major focus of the study is to determine if inflammation, mediated by IL-6 signalling, underpins respiratory muscle dysfunction in hypoxia.
