Physiological Society Annual Meeting in London

11 Jul 2014

Professor Ken O'Halloran co-organised and chaired a symposium at the Physiological Society Annual Meeting in London in July.

The symposium focussed on co-morbidities of the sleep apnoea syndrome (a common devastating respiratory disorder) with contributions from leading and emerging researchers in the field from the USA, Spain, Israel and Ireland. Speakers highlighted the wide-ranging deleterious effects of the disorder, which likely relates to recurrent bouts of hypoxic exposure (due to pauses in breathing during sleep), on multiple organ systems with new evidence of an apparent association between sleep apnoea and cancer. On-going work in translational models of sleep apnoea are revealing pathological mechanisms that offer potential therapeutic targets for interventional studies.
