In the Making is a one-day, participatory and multidisciplinary arts festival designed to spotlight and inspire creative exploration and discovery. Taking place in the city’s iconic Cork Opera House on Wednesday, April 2nd, 2025, this packed programme presents a unique opportunity to look inside the imaginations and creative practices of vibrant artists and makers, connecting audiences with some of the distinctive creative processes, inspirations and ideas driving Ireland’s arts scene today.

Great to meet students and staff from Presentation Ballyphehane and Glanmire Community College to the Granary Theatre for a talk and workshop. Both schools have been selected to deliver the new Theatre, Drama and Film Studies subject at Leaving Cert level in 2025. The groups of Transition Year students who attended the workshops have expressed an interest in taking up the subject. 

Dyson (he/him) is a sound researcher, metalworker, performer and installation artist whose practice operates between critical spatial theory, sound studies, and site-specific interventions in relation to the phenomenology of place and maintenance. 

The Knitting Map, a collaborative textile based project created as part of Cork Capital of Culture 2005 is currently installed in Art Museum of West Virginia University in Morgantown.

UCC Youth Theatre (UCCYT) will host a free workshop for young people aged 13+ with an interest in gaining Theatre skills, developing creatively, and meeting new people.

IN HER HEAD consists of three short theatre adaptations created by UCC Department of Theatre Final Year students. A common thread running through the three pieces is the experience of being a woman in the world.

The Department of Theatre is delighted to announce that two arts professionals of the highest calibre are being supported by the Irish Research Council within the Enterprise Partnership Scheme for Postgraduate researchers and the Employment-Based Postgraduate Programme to complete PhD research. Each will receive funding of €110,000 to support their study, from their organisational partner and the IRC. Both candidates will be integrating artistic practice into their research trajectories.

Picture the Audience Naked is a sharing of new work in progress created by MA and BA students in the Department of Theatre, University College Cork. Students across a range of modules will share their work together in the Granary Theatre. 

The sharing run over two nights and starts at 8pm - Wednesday 30th Nov and Thurs 1st Dec - with different work presented each night.

Modules presenting work include First Year Introduction to Practice, Final Year Special Studies in Theatre Practice and MA Advanced Theatre Practice. The sharing is supported by Second Year Performance Technologies: Explorations.

Inclusive Dance Cork is a pilot training programme open to dance and movement practitioners interested in learning inclusive dance methods. It is planned as a two-year training programme for professional artists, teachers of dance, and dance practitioners, inclusive of people with and without disabilities.

Killing Stella is inspired by Marlen Haushofer’s compelling novella Wir töten Stella (Austria, 1958), an unflinching story of collusion in abuse, and the price that has to be paid for remaining silent. This is the very first time Haushofer’s story has been translated and adapted for an English-speaking audience. With a host Department of Theatre staff and graduate involvement. 

Disco Pigs, directed by final year student Aideen Fox, takes home three national awards and was nominated for two more.

Cork Opera House and UCC are delighted to announce that Cork playwright and actor John McCarthy has been selected as the inaugural Theatre Artist in Residence.

Killing Stella is inspired by Marlen Haushofer’s compelling novella Wir töten Stella (Austria, 1958), an unflinching story of collusion in abuse, and the price that has to be paid for remaining silent.This is the very first time Haushofer’s story has been translated and adapted for an English-speaking audience. With a host Department of Theatre staff and graduate involvement. 

Members from four different youth theatre met up in UCC on Fri 22nd June to take part in workshops, learn critical thinking skills and see theatre productions.

Prof. Manfred Schewe has been invited to give a keynote lecture and lead eight workshop sessions as part of English Week (12-17 November 2017), organized by the International Forum for Steiner/Waldorf Education in Odenthal-Altenberg, near Cologne. Wednesday 25^th January: Dr. Danijela Kulezic-Wilson

In her presentation Dr. Kulezic-Wilson will explore how Beckett’s infatuation with music led him to reach beyond the denotative purpose of language and imagine his theatre plays as musical compositions. She will be discussing how Beckett’s lifelong striving to achieve the perceptual immediacy of music through words was the primary force behind his reinvention of language and the creation of several landmark works in modern theatre.

A 17 minute film based on the SCENARIO FORUM CONFERENCE 2017 entitled "Performative Spaces in Language, Literature and Culture Education" (University College Cork, 25 – 28 May) 

The UNIMA Research Commission with Cork Puppetry Festival, Drama and Theatre Studies - UCC, and Mary Immaculate College, is delighted to announce a two-day symposium exploring the ways puppetry intersects with disability and health.

The Department of Drama & Theatre Studies is pleased to introduce a new Higher Diploma in Arts (Theatre and Performative Practices) in the academic year 2017/18. 

The Higher Diploma in Arts (Theatre & Performative Practices) is a conversion course to Theatre-related studies for students with degrees in subjects other than Theatre or with Theatre as a minor subject. Completion of the Higher Diploma in Theatre & Performative Practices effectively converts your degree to the equivalent of an honours degree with Theatre as the main subject. 
It is designed for non-theatre graduates who wish to upskill, gain an additional qualification in the area of Theatre & Performative Practices which will pave the way to further study at MA or PhD level.

Practice-as-research at the intersection between embodied practice and theory.

Next weekend the 25th - 28th May sees the second SCENARIO Forum Conference entitled 'Performative Spaces in Language, Literature and Cultural Education'. Celebrating 10 years of SCENARIO Forum Journal this Conference welcomes over 100 speakers and workshop leaders from four continents and eighteen countries to explore the potential of performative spaces in relation to different content areas, genres, themes and approaches.

FOREGROUNDS 2017 showcases the theatre-making talents of final year single and joint honours students in Drama & Theatre Studies at UCC.

A theatre evening in two parts, FOREGROUNDS 2017 presents 21^st Century adaptations of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ by Lewis Carroll, The Tain, Orpheus and Eurydice, ‘The Canterville Ghost’ by Oscar Wilde and a piece of documentary film adapted from the real life experience of a lung transpantee.

Staging Beckett's Prose

15th February: Gare St Lazare Ireland in conversation with Dr. Nicholas Johnson (TCD)

In conversation with Dr. Nicholas Johnson, Judy Hegarty Lovett and Conor Lovett of Gare St. Lazare Ireland will discuss their work on staging Beckett’s prose. There will be a special focus on their current work in development on Beckett’s prose piece How it is (1964).

Also during the entire duration of the event there will be an exhibition of images/videos and a solo durational dance performance (6 hours) where audience are free to stay as long as they wish.
