Brian Bugler works in Audio Visual and Media Services as a Senior Audio Visual Designer.  In this article Brian tells us about his career in UCC, becoming a member of the Governing Authority and life outside UCC.

Brian, when did you start your career in UCC?

I started working in UCC in 2001 where I worked for a couple of years in the mechanical workshop in Electrical Engineering. I was fortunate to work with Mick O’Shea in that time. One of the most interesting projects I worked on was building a hybrid go-cart which we used to race around the building in!

When did you join the Audio Visual (AV) and Media Services Team?

Following my time in Electrical Engineering, I travelled across Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the USA. In 2005 I returned to UCC to work in the AV department and haven’t looked back since!

A lot has changed since 2005, tell us more about your job today.

A lot has changed, from copying VHS tapes and replacing acetate in overhead projectors to now designing and developing the AV systems for capital projects. The latest being the Cork University Business School (CUBS), along with big lecture theatres, classrooms and active learning classrooms, the building will be equipped with state-of-the-art podcast rooms, quantitative investment labs, and much more.  Aside from the CUBS project, I worked on a new Chemistry Lab that will be officially opening by the Minister for DHFERIS later this month.

Congratulations on your recent election to the UCC Governing Authority, tell us about your ambitions as a governor?

Success in the recent GB election has been a good confidence boost. My exposure as a SIPTU representative and of course my day-to-day job means I get to meet a lot of staff. I am looking forward to the next four years as a governor. I think Nora Geary and her team are doing a really good job at present and what I look forward to most is learning from her excellent team how the governance of UCC will ensure that UCC builds on its reputation.

Swimming, Tai Chi and Classic Porsche…. Tell us more about life outside of UCC?

Outside of UCC there isn’t a whole lot of spare time with three young children: Hiro, Haruki and Hana. Swimming is the sport in the Bugler family, so the Mardyke Arena pool is a regular feature of our week. You might spot me doing Tai Chi outside the Glucksman to bring the heartrate down and then to bring the heart rate up again, I take my classic Porsche for a drive out the Lee Road. For pure joy though I like to go spearfishing in the sea, hunting for Bass and Bream.
