Alumni who served in World War One

In 1919, a short booklet listing those who had fought in World War I was published by UCC. This contains six sections:

  • Students past and present engaged in the war
  • Distinctions granted
  • Deaths
  • the College War Guild
  • the Sphagnum Depot
  • and Books for Munster Soldiers' Fund.

This has now been digitised and is available to download: War Record of University College Cork 1919 [PDF]

In the lead up to the centenary of the beginning of this war, the late Michael Holland, University Curator, Heritage Services, Buildings & Estates, UCC, began a project to check and update this list. It was discovered that the War Record of UCC was not completely accurate, and so he and research assistant Fiona Devoy [now Dr Fiona Devoy McAuliffe] built on this and added further information and details from December 2010-June 2012. Michael continued the research, including collaborating with others who were interested in this period of history, until Autumn 2018 when his illness prevented further work. This data has now been input into a database and the most recent version of the research is dated 24 July 2023.

Research in draft form can be downloaded here: UCC Alumni who served in World War One (draft 24 July 2023) [PDF].

The work continues to check and improve the information about those alumni who served in World War One as well as other historic alumni since 1849.
