Lecturers Yvon Bonenfant and Sarah Hoover:

Our teaching explores experimentation and innovation. Within this, we aim to help students link their personal creativity and to develop groupwork skills inside the kind of real-world, collaborative environments students will encounter outside the classroom. We ask students to generate poetic beauty from envigorating starting points.

So, this project launched when MTU textile artist students shared portfolios with us that excavated the sensations and meanings evoked by specific parts of the human body. From these, our performance-makers developed and then publicly shared short video works that responded to these textile art stimuli. Subsequently, the textile artists responded to the process by developing concepts for garments and costumes that would incorporate living, moving performers; and then our performance-makers responded to all of this with the video works you witness here today. Collectively we created new spaces to discover connection, and new ways to communicate about, over, and through these spaces: a wide array of poetries of the body. We have re-directed our attention – our own, and hopefully yours – to what is temporary, what remains, and what the body renews, in this Covid-19 environment where we crave return of contact and social engagement so deeply.
