Four secondary school students represented Ireland at the European Girls’ Olympiad in Informatics (EGOI), which took place in Bonn, Germany from 14th–20th July 2025. The students were accompanied by Dr Laura Maye, Lecturer in the School of Computer Science and Information Technology at University College Cork (UCC), and Isabel Ronan, a PhD student in the School.

The Irish team comprised Lily Cahill, Afric Deasy, Beatrice Cesonyte, and Jenna Caitlyn Hayes. All four were selected based on their performance in the All-Ireland Programming Olympiad (AIPO) final, held at UCC on 15th February 2025. AIPO is jointly organised by the School of Computer Science and Information Technology and the UCC ACM Student Chapter.

The team prepared for the Olympiad through the Advanced Training Camp, part of the School’s ICT Summer Camps, which is designed to support high-achieving students preparing for international competitions. This camp, along with the Munster Programming Training (MPT) programme and AIPO, is coordinated by Dr Sabin Tabirca, Outreach Director for the School of Computer Science and Information Technology.

EGOI is an international programming competition for female and non-binary secondary school students. Founded in 2021, the event aims to promote gender diversity in computing by offering a platform for young people to develop their skills and engage with peers from across Europe and beyond. The format mirrors that of the International Olympiad in Informatics, with two five-hour contests featuring complex algorithmic problems.

The second is a scenic shot of Schloss Drachenburg in Bonn. The third features decorative lighting spelling out “EGOI2025.” The fourth shows Afric Deasy using a VR headset during one of the event activities.

Participants had the opportunity to explore the host city and take part in cultural activities, contributing to an enriching and memorable international experience.

The School of Computer Science and Information Technology is proud to support Ireland’s involvement in EGOI and extends well done to the team for their participation.
