Renowned scientist Dr. Mazin Qumsiyeh will deliver a seminar on "Working for Local and Global Biodiversity and Sustainability under the Stress of Colonisation." The seminar will address threats such as climate change, habitat destruction, pollution, overexploitation, and colonialism, with a focus on Palestine. It will take place on Thursday, May 25th, and will be available both online and in-person. Attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy a light lunch provided by the Centre for Global Development (CGD).

  1. Renowned Scientist Dr. Mazin Qumsiyeh to Discuss Global Biodiversity and Sustainability in Seminar

The Centre for Global Development (CGD) is organizing a seminar on the topic "Working for Local and Global Biodiversity and Sustainability under the Stress of Colonisation." The seminar will feature the distinguished Dr. Mazin Qumsiyeh, founder and volunteer director of the Palestine Institute for Biodiversity and Sustainability (PIBS) at Bethlehem University.

Addressing the interconnected threats faced by sustainable human and natural communities, the seminar will shed light on the detrimental effects of climate change, habitat destruction, pollution, overexploitation, and colonialism. Dr. Qumsiyeh will draw from his extensive experience and expertise to explore the synergies between these threats and discuss effective responses. With a special focus on the critical example of Palestine, the seminar will highlight the urgent need to envision and work towards a better future in order to tackle global existential threats.

The seminar will take place on Thursday, May 25th, from 1-2 PM, and will be held both online and in-person at Room G13, The Cooperage, Distillery Fields, UCC. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with Dr. Qumsiyeh's insights and participate in a stimulating discussion on the pressing challenges faced by biodiversity and sustainability.

Dr. Mazin Qumsiyeh, originally from Beit Sahour near Bethlehem, has dedicated his life to serving his homeland and promoting environmental conservation. He has an impressive academic background, having spent numerous years working at prestigious universities in the United States. As the founder and volunteer director of the Palestine Institute for Biodiversity and Sustainability, Dr. Qumsiyeh has established an oasis of hope within a turbulent landscape.

With over 160 scientific papers, more than 30 book chapters, and several books published on diverse topics ranging from cultural heritage to human rights to biodiversity conservation to cancer, Dr. Qumsiyeh has made significant contributions to various fields. His commitment extends beyond academia, as he actively serves on the boards of Palestinian youth and service organizations. Additionally, Dr. Qumsiyeh oversees multiple projects focused on the sustainability of human and natural communities.

Dr. Qumsiyeh's outstanding achievements have earned him recognition and accolades. In 2020, he was honored as a laureate of the Paul K. Feyerabend Foundation award, which celebrates exceptional accomplishments that inspire others. Furthermore, in 2019, he received the prestigious Takreem award, which acknowledges leading Arab figures for their environmental work.

The seminar promises to be a unique opportunity to gain insights from Dr. Mazin Qumsiyeh and explore innovative approaches to biodiversity and sustainability. Attendees will have the chance to participate in a thought-provoking discussion and contribute to the global dialogue on addressing environmental challenges
