UCC BEES Researcher ranks 5th at World Championships

Tom Drinan Third year PhD candidate Tom Drinan of the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences, UCC was today ranked number 5 in the world in Italy.

Speaking today from Lago di Braies in Northern Italy, Tom said he was “shocked and it hasn’t yet sunk in that I am 5th in the world”.The competition is taking place in Italy and involves 29 countries and is the final of this world event.  Tom was competing in the 21st FIPS Mouche World Fly Fishing Championships and competed with 109 other competitors from 21 other countries in the Senior Fly Fishing event.In the team events the Irish team came in at 15th overall.  

Tom is a popular graduate student in the School of BEES and has represented Ireland on a number of occasions.  His PhD is on the study of the interactions between forest and water quality including fish.    He has previously won many local and regional fishing competitions including the Munster River Championship and the Cobh International Sea Angling competition.  He is also a qualified jockey and has won/competed in over 80 point-to-point and amateur races.
