Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

The focus of the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee at the School of BEES is

  • to promote equality for all staff and students in the School.
  • to increase the diversity of contribution within the School.
  • to cultivate further an inclusive culture.

Athena SWAN (Scientific Women's Academic Network) is a quality charter mark framework and accreditation scheme that celebrates good practices in higher education towards the advancement of gender equality: representation, progression and success. 

In 2016 BEES was one of the first Schools in UCC, and nationally, to earn Athena SWAN accreditation when the Charter was introduced to Ireland in 2015. 

In 2021 the School become one of the first two UCC Schools to successfully renew their Athena SWAN accreditation The application which demonstrated that the School has a clear commitment to gender equality and a positive record of completed actions and progress. 

The School EDIW Committee will now push ahead to implement the new action plan in the years ahead with a strong commitment to achieving a Silver Award in the next review cycle We also work with UCC and outside organisations to promote the careers of women in STEM subjects.
