On January 18th the proposed BSc. (Hons) International Nursing (German) programme was approved by the University programme Approval Panel to commence in September 2013 with a cohort of 15 students. This is a significant milestone for the School of Nursing and Midwifery as this is the only bilingual, dual qualification, cross border nursing programme in Europe.
We believe the new programme will benefit nursing on a number of fronts:
- It will enhance the internationalisation and global engagement of nursing
- promote the intercultural competencies of nursing graduates
- optimise the student experience by providing greater opportunities for personal growth and development outside the classroom by providing opportunities for international work placement and the development of German language skills.
- stimulate opportunities for voluntary and positively motivated job mobility between Ireland and Germany and promote the recognition of linguistic, academic and professional qualifications in both jurisdictions
In addition to the 4 year BSc. Nursing programme, students will undertake a 20 credit Diploma in Applied German language. All theory components of the programme will be undertaken in the Catherine Mc Auley School of Nursing and Midwifery UCC . Each year students will travel to Germany for a periods of 7-16 weeks (years 1, 2 and 3) to undertake the clinical component of their training in a variety of clinical sites in the University Hospital Bonn. In year 4 of the programme students will work in Germany as pre-registration student nurses for a period of 37 weeks.
While on clinical placement in Bonn, students will be provided with free accommodation, language support, and subsidised food and travel. In Year 3 of the programme students will be offered a full time permanent contract to work in the University Hospital Bonn and will be contractually obliged to remain in Germany for a period of 2 years post qualification.
The programme team are to be congratulated on bringing this new initiative to fruition and we look forward to seeing the first 15 students enter the doors of Brookfield Health Sciences Complex in September. 2013.
