Ireland has seen a vast increase in the use of complementary therapies, similar to international trends. The growth of complementary therapies requires a more integrative approach to the delivery of health care. Nurses are at the fore front of health care delivery, and they require adequate knowledge and skills of complementary therapies. Knowledge and education are key requirements to enable successful integration of orthodox care with complementary therapies. This module explores the use of complementary therapies in the Irish healthcare system, and introduces students to a sample of complementary therapies. It focuses on the nurse’s role and the need for an enhanced education approach to expand the current body of knowledge. The module Complementary Therapies in Healthcare is now in its 6th successful year in the Catherine McAuley School of Nursing & Midwifery
