Professor Geraldine McCarthy appointed Chairperson of South/South West Hospital Group.
05 Nov 2013The Minister for Health, Dr. James Reilly TD on 1st November, 2013 announced the appointment of Professor Geraldine McCarthy as Chairperson of the South/South West Hospital Group.
The South/South West Group comprises Cork University Hospital/CUMH; Waterford Regional Hospital; Kerry General Hospital; Mercy University Hospital; South Tipperary General Hospital; South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital; Bantry General Hospital; Mallow General Hospital and the Lourdes Orthopaedic Hospital, Kilcreene.
The Group’s academic partner is University College Cork.

4th year B.Sc. Nursing student, Ms Siobhán O’Connor, overall winner at the Undergraduate Awards held recently.
23 Sep 2013A 4th year B.Sc. Nursing student from University College Cork (UCC), Ms Siobhán O’Connor, was the overall winner in the Nursing & Midwifery category. Her winning submission was entitled "The scourge of chronic venous leg ulcers – is topical zinc the answer? A review of the literature". Ms O’Connor developed the idea for the essay based on her coursework from a wound management module taught by Ms Siobhán Murphy a lecturer in the School of Nursing & Midwifery at UCC. She also had a keen interest in wound care having spent an intensive week at a wound management clinic at the South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital, Cork working alongside Sinead Dennehy, a Clinical Nurse Specialist in wound care.

On January 18th the proposed BSc. (Hons) International Nursing (German) programme was approved by the University programme Approval Panel to commence in September 2013 with a cohort of 15 students. This is a significant milestone for the School of Nursing and Midwifery as this is the only bilingual, dual qualification, cross border nursing programme in Europe.

The School of Nursing and Midwifery is delighted to announce the official opening of its self-contained Simulation Suite, which will complement the existing state of the art simulation facilities within the Clinical Skills Simulation Resource Centre.
The suite consists of three high-fidelity simulation rooms which replicate a standard hospital high dependency unit environment. Each location is equipped with an extensive range of information technology and audio-visual equipment, thus equipped as one would expect to see in an acute hospital.

The facility can be transformed to represent various locations of a hospital environment. Equipped with an impressive array of high fidelity adult and child mannequins, students can engage in realistic clinical scenarios without risk to patients. In this way they can be prepared to manage any number of acute clinical events they may encounter.

Irish report on the impact of acquired brain injury published
26 Feb 2015This report, titled "Barriers and facilitators to developing natural community supports as a basis for independent living: the experiences and perceptions of people with acquired brain injury", gives the findings of research conducted by researchers from the School of Nursing and Midwifery University and the School of Applied Social Studies, University College Cork. This research was funded by the National Disability Authority under the Research Promotion Grants Scheme.
