The Minister for Health, Dr. James Reilly TD on 1st November, 2013 announced the appointment of Professor Geraldine McCarthy as Chairperson of the South/South West Hospital Group. 

The South/South West Group comprises Cork University Hospital/CUMH; Waterford Regional Hospital; Kerry General Hospital; Mercy University Hospital; South Tipperary General Hospital; South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital; Bantry General Hospital; Mallow General Hospital and the Lourdes Orthopaedic Hospital, Kilcreene.

The Group’s academic partner is University College Cork.

A 4^th year B.Sc. Nursing student from University College Cork (UCC), Ms Siobhán O’Connor, was the overall winner in the Nursing & Midwifery category. Her winning submission was entitled "The scourge of chronic venous leg ulcers – is topical zinc the answer? A review of the literature". Ms O’Connor developed the idea for the essay based on her coursework from a wound management module taught by Ms Siobhán Murphy a lecturer in the School of Nursing & Midwifery at UCC. She also had a keen interest in wound care having spent an intensive week at a wound management clinic at the South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital, Cork working alongside Sinead Dennehy, a Clinical Nurse Specialist in wound care. 

A 3-day Summer School on Family Research, held in the School of Nursing and Midwifery on 26^th, 27^th and 28^th of August 2013, turned out to be a great success. The Summer School was facilitated by Dr. Kathy Knafl and Dr. Marcia Van Riper (From the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill). 

The 3^rd International Public Health Nursing Conference was held in NUI Galway from 25^th -27^th August and hosted over 400 delegates from 24 countries

Following the successful 3-day Hearing Voices Group Facilitation & Network Development Training workshop in June of last year,  the School is pleased to announce two further 3-Day Hearing Voices Group Facilitation & Network Development Training workshops scheduled for October 2013 here in the Brookfield Health Sciences Complex.

International Summer School - De-medicalising Health Care: Critical and Social Perspectives

Recently three members of the School of Nursing and Midwifery staff went on a site visit to Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, Scotland.  The purpose of the visit was to investigate the route this University has taken in becoming extremely successful in providing online education for its nursing students.

Well done and congradulations to Ms. Lynne Marsh who took second place in the UCC Doctoral Showcase for 2013 held in the Aula Max this week.

Phil Healy a second year Integrated Children’s and General Nursing student won the 200m sprint event & the Open 60m title at the National Indoor U23 & Junior athletics championships in Athlone recently.

This report, titled "Barriers and facilitators to developing natural community supports as a basis for independent living: the experiences and perceptions of people with acquired brain injury", gives the findings of research conducted by researchers from the School of Nursing and Midwifery University and the School of Applied Social Studies, University  College Cork.   This research was funded by the National Disability Authority under the Research Promotion Grants Scheme.

School of Nursing & Midwifery was profiled in the Sunday Business Post on February 15^th 2015 relating to Online and Blended Learning.
