Dr Jürgen Titschack visits the UCC Marine Geosciences Research Group

Dr Jürgen Titschack visited the Marine Geosciences Research Group here at the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Science this week.

Dr Titschack is based in MARUM, the Centre for Marine Environmental Sciences in the University of Bremen, Germany. He is an Advanced Research Scientist who specialises in Palaeontology; which he done his PhD in at the University of Erlangen, Germany. He also specialises in Heterozoan carbonates, Environmental archives, Cold-water corals and CT analyses.

During his visit Dr Titschack presented his research titled "The Coral Mound Carbonate Factory" to a large group of researchers and students. During this talk, he discussed the Cold-water coral ecosystems and their role in the global carbonate/carbon cycle. He also outlined the process of CT scanning and Micro-CT scanning in his research, which is what our PhD student Luke O'Reilly is currently carrying out on our cores from the MMMonKey_Pro project with guidance from Dr Titschack and his expertise in the area.

It was an honour to have such an expert present to us today, and we are looking forward to welcoming Dr Jürgen Titschack back in the near future.
