Mobility outside of Europe
Students can apply to study outside the EU for one semester or the full academic year
- Before applying, please ensure you review our FAQ section- Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
- Similar to Erasmus, you will be required to research the partner universities and ensure they offer suitable modules to suit your UCC degree.
There are two types of exchanges
- University wide agreements- this is when it is open to all degree programmes provided suitable modules are available
- Specific subject areas- this is when only students from a specific UCC degree can apply to study at a partner university. Students from these areas have specific exchange partners- Arts, BComm, Law, Languages, School of Asian Studies

Where can UCC students apply to study?
- Australia- open to SEFS students (semester 2 only)
- Brazil- University wide agreement (required to have portuguese. Limited classes in English)
- Canada- University wide agreements and subject specific agreements
- China- University wide agreements and subject specific agreements
- India- University wide agreement and Law agreement
- Japan- subject specific agreements (School of Asian Studies only)
- Mexico- University wide agreement
- Peru- subject specific agreements (language students only)
- Singapore- University wide agreements and subject specific agreements
- South Korea- subject specific agreements (School of Asian Studies only)
- Taiwan- subject specific agreements (School of Asian Studies only)
- United States of America- University wide agreements and subject specific agreements
Languages
- If you are studying a language at UCC, your department will manage your study abroad period.
- You are required to study in the country of the language you are studying
Funding
- Students who choose to study or undertake a placement in countries outside the EU are not eligible for Erasmus funding and are therefore not classified as Erasmus students.
- Please note that the UCC International Office does not offer funding for mobility opportunities outside of Europe.
Partner Universities and places available
The list of partner universities and available exchange places are subject to change from year to year.
Minimum grade requirements apply to students wishing to study outside the EU. Please refer to the minimum grade criteria before applying.
How do I apply?
- Applications must be submitted in accordance with the guidelines provided here: How do I apply?
- You can list both EU and non-EU partners on your study abroad application
Suitability of non-EU universities
- Students are responsible for researching available modules and must do so before submitting their application
- Students should also consider their budget as studying outside the EU has much higher costs than Europe
Australia Exchange Network (AEN)
UCC is part of a network called Australian Exchange Network
Semester 2 only (February to July of your 3rd year)
- In the first instance, you must apply to UCC's International Office.
- It is the same process as applying for the regular exchange.
- Open to students in the College of Science, Engineering and Food Science provided that suitable modules for your degree are available
- A limited number of UCC departments permit their students to study abroad in semester 2 alone so students are required to have permission from their UCC academic coordinator prior to listing it on their application form.
- Not permitted: Students in a degree with a mandatory year abroad or students with work placement in semester 2 of 3rd year
AEN Application Steps
- Research 3 Universities and ensure they offer suitable modules for your UCC degree
- List 'AEN' on your UCC study abroad application so that we know you wish to be considered for a place within this network
- If you are allocated a place within the network, you will be contacted by us to submit your top 3 AEN Universities
- UCC nominates you to the AEN committee (early February)
- The AEN committee will place you in one of your top 3 choices

Mid America Universities International Network
UCC is part of a network called Mid America Universities International
- In the first instance, you must apply to UCC's International Office.
- It is the same process as applying for the regular exchange.
- Open to all degree programmes provided that suitable modules for your degree are available
M.A.U.I Application Steps
- Research 3 Universities and ensure they offer suitable modules for your UCC degree
- List 'M.A.U.I' on your UCC study abroad application so that we know you wish to be considered for a place within this network
- If you are allocated a place within the network, you will be contacted by us to submit your top 3 MAUI Universities
- UCC nominates you to the MAUI committee (early February)
- The MAUI committee will place you in one of your top 3 choices

Summer Schools outside the EU
Administrative support is available for selected summer schools offered by partner universities. For further details, please contact mb.murphy@ucc.ie
Application Process
UCC’s partner universities often run summer schools which are open to registered students. Please note,
attending a summer school is for non-credit and students are subject to fees.
Students must email the International Office at mb.murphy@ucc.ie for further information.
Please note that a place on the summer school is not guaranteed. Admission is subject to the following:
• Availability of places
• Payment of applicable fees
• Compatibility with the student’s programme of study
• Academic grades
• Requirements set by the host institution
• UCC departmental requirements
• Application deadlines
Deadline to apply
Application deadlines will vary but we recommend students reach out to the UCC International Office
before December each year as student selection and application deadlines are typically in January.
