The most electrifying of all films to emerge from the Great War was one which created the greatest male star of the silent era, Rudolph Valentino. It was directed by Dublin-born Rex Ingram and will be shown complete at this event, marking the centenary of World War One.
European film industries were devastated by the war, handing world domination to the Americans. But Europe needed Hollywood, for American films supported the Allies, even while they pretended to be neutral. Mary Pickford recreated the sinking of the Lusitania and the terror of German occupation, while Charlie Chaplin depicted trench warfare in a 1918 comedy.
