Oscar-winning producer David Puttnam to deliver a module on the UCC MA in Film Studies

The module will be delivered in November 2013 through an innovative combination of small group seminars and live interactive broadcasts.

 

 

UCC Film Studies is delighted to announce that Oscar-winning producer David Puttnam will be delivering a module to students on the MA in Film Studies in November 2013. Lord Puttnam is currently Adjunct Professor of Film and Digital Humanities at UCC, and also serves as Ireland's Digital Ambassador. 

David Puttnam began his career in the U.K advertising industry in the 1960s before moving into the film industry in the early 1970s. Among his many successes as a producer are: Stardust (1974); Bugsy Malone (1976); The Duellists (1977); Midnight Express (1978); Chariots of Fire (1981); Local Hero (1983); Cal (1984); The Killing Fields (1984); The Mission (1986); Memphis Belle (1990), and War of the Buttons (1990, shot in West Cork). During his distinguished career as a film producer he worked with directors such as Alan Parker, Ridley Scott, Roland Joffe, Bill Forsyth and Pat O'Connor, actors such as Robert de Niro, Jeremy Irons, Burt Lancaster, Glenn Close, Liam Neeson, Jodie Foster, Harvey Keitel and John Hurt, and writers such as Oliver Stone and Bruce Robinson. He was Head of Production at Columbia studios from 1986-88.

Among his many awards are an Oscar for Chariots of Fires, the Palme D'Or for The Mission, a BAFTA for The Killing Fields, and a British Academy Fellowship. He was knighted in 1995 and currently serves in the House of Lords.

Lord Puttnam has a passionate commitment to education, having served as Chancellor of the University of Sunderland, Chancellor of the Open University, Chairman of the National Film and Television School (UK), and Chairman of the UK's National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts. He is also Chairman of Atticus Education, an online education company based in Ireland. Atticus, through a unique arrangement with BT Ireland, delivers interactive seminars on film and a variety of other subjects to educational institutions around the world

From November, students on the MA in Film Studies will have the opportunity to attend an exciting new module delivered through an innovative combination of small group seminars delivered on the UCC campus and live interactive broadcasts. The module will offer insights into Lord Puttnam's career in the film industry, giving students unique insights into the background to his major productions, his experiences working with directors, writers and actors, and the challenges he faced as an independent producer and, later, as Head of Columbia studios. The module will also address larger issues such as filmmaking and ethics, filmmaking in the digital age, new models of film production, distribution and exhibition, and the opportunities that the new digital age offers both filmmakers and teachers.
