“Alfred Hitchcock's Titanic: the Film that Never Was”

has the pleasure of welcoming esteemed film scholar Charles Barr

to UCC for a public lecture titled

“Alfred Hitchcock's Titanic: the Film that Never Was”

on Tuesday March 20, at 6.30pm, in Boole 2

This is a highly topical event for the Titanic centenary year. Hitchcock went from Britain to Hollywood in 1939 under contract to make the definitive Titanic film, but it was postponed in favour of Rebecca,  and never did get revived. This presentation draws on two sources for a vivid reconstruction of the film that might have been: archival records and a compilation of shipboard and shipwreck scenes from the films that Hitchcock did make, ranging from the 1920s to the 1940s.

Charles Barr was one of the pioneers of academic Film Studies in the UK, teaching for many years at the University of East Anglia; more recently, he has worked in the US, and in Dublin and Galway. His publications include books on English Hitchcock and, in the BFI Classics series, Vertigo.
