UCC Computer Science Supports Team Ireland at EGOI and IOI 2026

UCC’s School of Computer Science and Information Technology (CSIT) supported Team Ireland’s participation at the European Girls’ Olympiad in Informatics (EGOI) in Italy and the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) in Uzbekistan in 2026.

European Girls’ Olympiad in Informatics

The European Girls’ Olympiad in Informatics took place from 12–18 May 2026. Ireland was represented by Beatrice Cesonyte, Afric Deasy and Nicole Cheng, who were accompanied by Dr Laura Maye, Lecturer in the School of Computer Science and Information Technology, and Isabel Ronan, PhD student in the School.

EGOI is an international programming competition for female and non-binary secondary school students, aimed at encouraging greater participation in computer science and competitive programming. The Irish team competed against students from across Europe and beyond, with Afric Deasy narrowly missing out on a bronze medal.

International Olympiad in Informatics

Later this summer, Team Ireland travelled to Tashkent, Uzbekistan, for the 38th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), held from 9–16 August 2026.

Team Ireland was represented by Ben Maguire, Mykyta Telychko, Séamas Riordan, and Afric Deasy. The students were accompanied by team leaders Dr Andrea Visentin, Senior Lecturer in the School of Computer Science and Information Technology, and Derbhile Timon, former School Manager at CSIT, who supported the team throughout the competition.

The IOI is one of the world’s most prestigious computer science competitions for secondary school students, bringing together some of the most talented young programmers from around the world to solve challenging algorithmic problems under time pressure.

AIPO and Team Preparation

The participation of Team Ireland reflects the strength of the training and preparation programme supporting students in informatics and competitive programming. 

The Irish teams’ participation in EGOI and IOI would not have been possible without the support of team leaders Dr Laura Maye, Isabel Ronan, Dr Andrea Visentin and Derbhile Timon.

Sincere thanks also go to Dr Sabin Tabirca, Andrew Nash and all those involved in supporting AIPO, specialised training and Ireland’s competitive programming activities, including the UCC ACM Student Chapter for their role in hosting the IrlCPC.
