CSIT Supports Team Ireland at International Olympiad in Informatics 2025

27 Jul 2025

The 37th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) took place in Sucre, Bolivia, from 27 July – 3 August 2025. The IOI is one of the world’s most prestigious computer science competitions for secondary school students, challenging participants to solve algorithmic problems under time-pressure. Beyond the competition, it celebrates the next generation of talent in computer science. The School of Computer Science and Information Technology (CSIT) at UCC proudly supported Team Ireland’s participation in this year’s event.

Ireland was represented by four students at the IOI: Piotr Stelmaszek, Mykyta Telychko, Weichen Huang, and Anaus (Sam) Syed. A special congratulations goes to Piotr Stelmaszek (who also competed at the IOI 2024), for being awarded an Honourable Mention at this highly competitive international event.

The Irish team was selected through a competitive process that began with the All-Ireland Programming Olympiad (AIPO). The AIPO Final took place online on 15 February, after which the top performers were invited to join the Junior Track of the Ireland Collegiate Programming Competition (IrlCPC). The IrlCPC was held in the Western Gateway Building on 1 March 2025, where the top performers earned their places on the IOI and European Girls’ Olympiad in Informatics (EGOI) teams.

The Irish team's participation in the IOI would not have been possible without the support of Dr Andrea Visentin and PhD student, Andrew Nash, who accompanied the students to Bolivia and supported them throughout the competition. Sincere thanks also go to Dr Sabin Tabirca, Director of CSIT Student Outreach, who organises the training programmes and the AIPO competition each year, and to the UCC ACM Student Chapter for their role in hosting the IrlCPC.
