CIRTL Seminar: Peer Critical Learning (PCL): Design Challenges in the Virtual Classroom, March 26th

Professor Laurence Malone, Fulbright Specialist with CIRTL will host a lunchtime seminar on Tuesday 26th March 2019.

I’ve been a Fulbright Specialist working with CIRTL staff since mid-February. One of my tasks has been to promote the use of my Peer Critical Learning (PCL) pedagogy at UCC. PCL empowers students to take greater ownership of their learning by engaging in peer-to-peer critiques as part of assessment in a module. I have used PCL throughout my career in traditional classrooms, and have recently migrated it to online (Virtual) settings.

This seminar will offer a review of my PCL teaching and learning methods, and provide insight into how PCL can improve online instruction. Our aim is to learn together, which is the objective of PCL. Expect plenty of social engagement!

We will begin with a brief sketch my PCL approach, then consider how to use it in Virtual classroom settings (both blended and fully online). Specifically, the following questions will be considered:

• What are the benefits of using PCL in a traditional, face-to-face, classroom setting?
• How can PCL be used in an asynchronous, virtual learning setting to foster social interaction and engagement among students (beyond the Discussion Board)?
• Will Canvas be up to the task, at UCC?
• What are some opportunities for UCC, its staff, students, and you if instructional design incorporates the PCL approach?
