Chemistry postgraduate student Jennifer Halpin won the Postgraduate Research Showcase competition, in the Masters by Research category, which was held in UCC earlier this week.

Jennifer's presentation described her work on the US: Ireland water splitting project RENEW and her work involves applying extremely thin layers of a stable material to protect cadmium sulfide which corrodes when exposed to light in water.  The thin layers are applied using atomic layer deposition (ALD) at the Tyndall National Institute. These materials are being developed with the aim of splitting water using solar energy to generate hydrogen fuel.

Jennifer is currently carrying out her Masters Research project under the supervision of Prof. Martyn Pemble.
