Integrated Children’s and General nursing students receive blessing of hands
The photo above includes soon to be qualified student nurses from the Integrated Children’s and General nursing programme with members of the chaplaincy departments from UCC and CUH.
On Feb the 6th Fr. David officiated at a very meaningful blessing of the hands ceremony in the Honan Chapel at UCC. He was accompanied by members of the chaplaincy in UCC and CUH. 18 soon to be nurse graduates from the integrated Children’s/General nursing programme got their hands blessed. They participated fully in the ceremony with readings, poetry, music and song.
Representatives from the School of Nursing and Midwifery as well as nursing staff from Cork university Hospital gathered with the student’s family and friends to share this very meaningful and special occasion.
The blessing of hands ceremony is very much part of the Irish nursing tradition. This year the event was historic as it is the first time that such an even has taken place on college campus.
Later that afternoon the students joined with lecturing and support staff from UCC and representatives from the Health Service providers for a very lively, enjoyable and emotional end of programme celebration. We wish our newly qualified nurses every good wish and success in the future.
