Michael O'Halloran retires from UCC after 43 years of dedicated service.

When Michael O'Halloran began his journey with IT Services at University College Cork (UCC) in 1982, the department was known as the Computer Bureau, the Boole Library was being built, and the world wide web was still seven years away from becoming a reality. Joining as part of the then Technical Advisory Group, Michael played a pivotal role from the outset in helping the UCC community embrace and navigate the emerging digital age. Over the decades, his career would come to mirror the transformation of IT itself - from a single IBM mainframe to a vast digital ecosystem supporting thousands of users across the university.

Michael’s Career – Pioneering Innovation

In the mid-1980s, Michael joined the Systems Group, where he spent over a decade helping to modernise UCC’s technical infrastructure. He played a key role in moving the university from standalone mainframes and minicomputers to a networked environment of personal computers and servers. Notably, he led the deployment of UCC’s first Ethernet LANs and DECnet systems, foundational steps toward the connected campus we know today.

In October 2000, Michael became manager of the newly formed User Services team, where he applied his technical expertise to transform service delivery. He introduced Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) based standards, expanded helpdesk access, launched proactive IT training, and modernised support through online platforms. He also built a strong technical unit to support a growing infrastructure and pioneered the use of student staff at the Helpdesk, creating a pipeline of future IT talent. Notably, Michael partnered with the Library to establish the shared Student IT Support desk within its space.

A Fond Farewell

Michael’s retirement in June 2025 will mark the end of an era. On 22nd May, Michael’s family and colleagues from IT Services and across UCC came together to celebrate over 43 years of exceptional service. The event was more than a farewell, it was a heartfelt tribute to a career defined by integrity, dedication, and leadership. It was especially lovely to have UCC President, Professor John O'Halloran, join us for the occasion - not only as President, but also as Michael’s brother, adding a personal and meaningful touch to the celebration.

Thank you Michael, from the UCC IT Services Team.
