Changes to Email Services

11 Oct 2016

As you are no doubt aware, UCC has been targeted by a number of Phishing attacks in the recent past.  For this reason, we had to increase the detection thresholds this summer which resulted in some legitimate email being tagged as SPAM.  On Monday 17th October, we are planning to implement a new solution for SPAM email.

Quarantine:

Rather than prepending **SPAM?** to the subject of emails being detected as SPAM, they will now be held in Quarantine until they are released by you.  Each day, a digest email will be sent to your mailbox showing the emails that have been quarantined since the last email was sent.  You can release those incorrectly quarantined and ignore the rest.  These will be automatically deleted after 15 days.

  • Go to the Office 365 FAQ section of the IT Services website for more information on Quarantining email.
  • There is also information on releasing email in the How to Guides section.

Clutter:

Clutter moves your low priority messages out of your Inbox so you can easily scan for important messages. Clutter analyses your email habits, and based on your past behaviour, it determines the messages that you’re most likely to ignore. It then moves those messages to a folder called Clutter, where you can review them later.  If you would like to turn clutter on or off, follow these instructions

Email.ucc.ie:

Currently when staff try to access their email over the internet, many go to http://email.ucc.ie where they are required to logon before getting redirected to Office 365 where they are forced to logon again. On Monday 17th October, we will be implementing a redirect on this site to https://outlook.office.com/owa/?realm=ucc.ie .  This will mean that you will be authenticated once on UCC’s federation servers and then redirected automatically to your mailbox.
