The abbey’s intellectual climate was ambitious and outward facing, with very frequent visits from elite patrons and high-ranking officials from England and abroad.

Becoming Deviant and Defiant Women with Bhawaiya folk songs in Bengal 26/9/24 26/9/24 FUAIM Lecture Ó Riada Hall Dr. Nasrin Khandoker, University College Cork The new gender norms for Bengali women were created by political, religious, and cultural encounters between British colonial mechanisms and the nationalist collective struggle to reconstruct the traditions of the Indian subcontinent. In between those colonial and nationalist binary narratives, one of the most popular folk song genres of Bengalis, Bhawaiya, has existed with sexually subversive emotional elements.

John Godfrey and Maximilin Le Cain 13/2/25 13/2/25 FUAIM Lecture Ó Riada Hall John Godfrey, University College Cork, Maximilian Le Cain, Film Artist in Residence 2023 “Dordán”: In 2012, Quiet Music Ensemble commissioned a work from one of Ireland’s most radical contemporary composers, Jennifer Walshe. The resulting piece, Dordán, was premiered at Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival 2013. In 2022, QME recorded the piece and commissioned renowned Irish experimental film maker Maximilian Le Cain to create a film version.

Haywood, Macau University of Science & Technology Whilst Cantonese opera faced significant challenges, the genre successfully survived the COVID-19 pandemic and quickly regained momentum once restrictions were lifted. Such a strong and quick recovery contrasts sharply with the usual claims found in popular discourse that Cantonese opera is in a state of constant decline.
