UCC Film Artists on Screen, Thursday Dec 21st @ 11am in The Arc Cinema, Cork

16 Dec 2023

As part of IndieCork Film Festival 2023 housed in the newly refurbished Arc Cinema, James Mulvey, lecturer in Film and Screen Media and Documentary Programmer at IndieCork, curates a selection of creative practice films from the MA in Film and Screen Media program.

Lawrence Cook’s Without Story tells a cryptic Russian politician’s science-fiction war story interlaced with archival footage of recent events.

Shell by Elena Binnig is a fictional short about a young couple’s relationship, depression, and a shared yet different experience. Capturing fragmented moments from everyday life Shell plays with perspective, the inside and the outside, the body and the mind.

Local artist Dervla Baker’s film Field is a self-reflexive documentary that explores the environmental concerns of biodiversity and climate mitigation on a local scale. Centred on an old dump, and marshland, near Mayfield in the northern suburbs of Cork, it weaves its way through multiple perspectives to discuss how meaning is placed on landscape.

The selection will showcase images which sift between fictive and non-fictive thought to address an intertwining of war, ecology, and subjectivity, deftly moving between the global and the local. James will host a Q&A with the creative practitioners after the screening.
