MA in Film and Screen Media students present ‘Cinespectres’

15 May 2023

On Thursday 11th May the MA in Film and Screen Media students presented ‘Cinespectres’, a showcase of films made under the mentorship of our 2023 Arts Council/UCC Film Artist in Residence, Maximilian Le Cain. This very special screening took place at the Triskel Arts Centre, and was introduced by Laura Rascaroli, Professor of Film and Screen Media, and Head of the School of Film, Music & Theatre at UCC.

Cinespectres’ was a true showcase for the talent and virtuosity of our MAs, who’ve been inspired and guided by Max in a series of workshops that formed part of his residency with us. Avleen Anand (I Am Just Making a Film), Dervla Baker (Arboreal) , Elena Binnig (The Yellow Place), Lawrence Cook (Did You Miss It? ), Aoibh Foynes (Bodies on the Box) and Daniel Heaphy (Where the Heart Is ) pushed and reimagined boundaries of form and emotion, weaving layers of sound and imagery–from original animation to found footage (sourced via the Department’s collaboration with Reuters/ScreenOcean)–to craft each of their rich, bold films.
The event also included a screening of 121, a collaboration between Maximilian Le Cain and artist/filmmaker, Aisling O’Connell. This haunting and immersive collage of personal imagery–adrift on tides of obsession–takes its cue from the idea of ornithomancy, the art of reading omens from the actions of birds.
