30 Oct 2019

The Department of Film and Screen Media, in association with the San Francisco Silent Film Festival, is delighted to welcome back to UCC the acclaimed film preservationist, Rob Byrne, President of the San Francisco Silent Film Festival.

Rob will present an illustrated talk on tracking down and restoring silent films; on the challenges and opportunities of preservation and of digital technology; and of the importance of preserving film heritage.  He will also introduce a screening of an extremely rare film, Behind the Door (1919), in a newly-restored print (see more about the film here: https://www.flickeralley.com/the-history-behind-behind-the-door-1919/).

Now in its 25th year, the San Francisco Silent Film Festival is one of the world's most renowned film festivals. A nonprofit organisation, it works tirelessly with archives, philanthropic funders, and distributors to track down and restore silent films from around the world.

All are welcome to attend this very special event, which takes place at 5.15pm on Thursday 21st November in the Film and Screen Media auditorium, Kane Building Basement Room B10.B
