Éire na Nuachtscannán Award Nomination

Éire na Nuachtscannán (Ireland in the Newsreels), a collaboration between UCC lecturer Ciara Chambers (Film and Screen Media) and independent filmmaker Mac Dara Ó’Curraidhín (LMDÓC) has been nominated in the Broadcast Award category of this year’s Learning on Screen Awards.

The Learning on Screen Awards have celebrated the use of film and media in education and research since 2005. This year saw the highest number of entries in the history of the awards. http://bufvc.ac.uk/events/learningonscreen/nominations

Funded by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, Éire na Nuachtscannán was televised in a primetime slot on TG4 in September and October 2017. Showcasing a range of rare archival footage, the six-part series explored how some of Ireland’s most important stories were handled by newsreel editors from the 1910s to the 1960s. As the only source of on-screen news available to the general public during the first half of the twentieth century, the newsreels were hugely influential and popular. Given the lack of a sustained newsreel industry in Ireland, Irish audiences were mostly catered for by external producers and the results of their attempts to represent Irish politics were regularly misleading and often controversial.  www.irelandinthenewsreels.com

The award ceremony will take place at the BFI Southbank, London on Thursday 26th April 2018.
