Postgrad Spotlight

The School of Physics would like to highlight the work of Postgraduate Student Odhran Liston.
Odhran received his BSc in Physics & Maths from UCC in 2022. He is currently studying for a PhD in the Integrated Photonics Group under the supervision of Professor Frank Peters and Dr. Bryan Kelleher.
Odhran's project investigates pulsed laser techniques for applications in quantum technologies. The overall goal of the project is to design and fabricate a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) that outputs extremely short (<50ps) pulses of light and operates at cryogenic temperatures (10K). The PIC would then serve as a source for optically pumping a quantum dot to generate single photons. The project encompasses simulating the dynamical behaviour of PICs using numerical rate equations, characterising the devices in both DC and pulsed regimes, and fabricating the PICs in the cleanroom facilities at the Tyndall National Institute. In addition, Odhran’s project explores the potential of photonic integrated circuits as neurons for use in next-generation spiking neural networks.
Odhran highlights that "although the PhD process can oftentimes be very challenging it is equally as rewarding. Having the opportunity to work on an exciting project, make use of the cutting-edge equipment in UCC and Tyndall, and collaborate with recognised and supportive experts in the field provides a unique environment to improve as a researcher."
