University staff experienced what they could do rather than what they couldn’t do!
Some staff 'enjoying' the Staff Wheelchair Basketball League in association with the Irish Wheelchair Association.
On Wednesday the 25th of November 2015 Dr Lynne Marsh & Mr Paul Ryan were responsible for organising a Staff Wheelchair Basketball League within the University Community. As part of our initiative to raise awareness of disability and to promote a more positive outlook to disability, we were delighted that staff teams from across the university competed.
On the day staffs competed fiercely and competitively and we had great fun. We were fortunate to have staff from the Disability Supports Services, Department of Chemistry, Computer Science, Applied Psychology, Health Sciences Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences University of Nottingham, COPE Foundation and our very own School of Nursing and Midwifery supporting this initiative. They have even pledged to gather more people for next year’s repeat competition.
The referee and facilitator Mr Paul Ryan from the Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) had staff under serious pressure competing in serious, set duration and competitive games of wheelchair basketball.
As wheelchair users, staff experienced what they could do rather than what they couldn’t do! I wish to thank most sincerely Mr. Paul Ryan (IWA) and Mr. Anthony Brennan, Duty Manager of the Mardyke Arena who provided the hall. Some of the photos captured display and give a sample of some amazing moments of determination, competitiveness and fun that highlighted abilities rather than disabilities.
