Dr Edel Semple, Lecturer in Shakespeare Studies in the Department of English, interviewed for Reduced Shakespeare Company Podcast.

8 Apr 2021

Dr Semple collaborated with Dr. Ronan Hatfull (University of Warwick) to convene a seminar on “Shakespearean Biofiction on the Stage and Screen” for this year’s conference of the Shakespeare Association of America.

The seminar gathered an international group of contributors and auditors to explore the tradition and recent vogue for depicting Shakespeare, his wife Anne Hathaway and their children, and his friends and collaborators on stage, film, and TV. Following the success of the seminar, Austin Tichenor (Co-Artistic Director of the Reduced Shakespeare Company, author, and actor) interviewed Dr Semple and Dr Hatfull about Shakespeare as a character on stage and screen. The discussion ranged from the Hollywood film Shakespeare in Love and the recent star-studded biopic All Is True, to the RSC’s hilarious play William Shakespeare a character in William Shakespeare’s Long Lost First Play (abridged), to Shakespeare as featured in Irish theatre such as Dead Centre’s Hamnet, Rough Magic’s Much Ado About Nothing, and Cyclone Sessions’ Romeo and Juliet production for schools. The interview is available on Apple Podcasts and on the RSC website at: https://www.reducedshakespeare.com/2021/04/analyzing-shakespearean-biofiction/
