UCC celebrates European Day of Languages

  • UCC will celebrate European Day of Languages across a series of free events for students and staff.
  •  ‘Languages for peace’ will explore how linguistic diversity and language education can play a key role in promoting a culture of peace and democracy.
  • UCC is in world’s top 250 universities for the study of Modern Languages, according to the World QS Rankings.

University College Cork (UCC) will host events to celebrate the European Day of Languages on Thursday, 26 September. The annual event, which has been celebrated across Europe since 2001, promotes the importance of language learning and highlights the diverse linguistic and cultural heritage of the continent.

Organised by UCC School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, the celebrations will focus on the theme of ‘Languages for Peace’. The events will explore the vital role of languages in fostering understanding, building connections across cultures, and promoting peace, particularly in times of conflict.

UCC is ranked in the world’s top 250 (201-250) universities for the study of Modern Languages, according to the World QS Rankings.

European Day of Languages events include:

  • ‘Languages for peace in times of conflict’, Keynote by Prof. Prue Holmes, University of Durham on Thursday, 26 Sept.| O'Rahilly Building, room 1.56 @ 5:30pm
  • Book Fair - donations in aid of Unicef, Thursday 26 Sept., all day | O'Rahilly Building, 1st floor, Social area
  • Overcoming Babel: Why Translation Is Key to Lasting Peace and Development, a podcast by Alison Rodriguez, President of the International Federation of Translators. Thursday 26 Sept. | UCC98.3FM between 12-1pm
  • ‘Poetic side works: Plurilingualism in Rilke and Rosselli’, a talk by Fanny Audeoud, University of Geneva. Thursday, 26 Sept. |C HUB 172 SHTEPPS at 10am.
  • Spaces to Decompress: One Hue at a Time, Introduction to Trans/ Actions: Translation as Activism on Friday, 27 Sept. |O'Rahilly Bdg., room 1.24 at 1-3pm.
  • Dialogue with DEM: a discussion about dictionary's creation process on Friday, 27 Sept. CACSSS Seminar Room ORB G.27 at 4pm
  • Peeling Back the Layers of Translation: an Interactive Reading on Monday, 30 Sept.|O'Rahilly Bdg., social area First floor at 12-1pm.
