Mark Leahy, 3rd Yr student, BSc (Hons) Medical and Health Sciences

Congratulations to Mark Leahy, BSc (Hons) Medical and Health Sciences, for being awarded the Irish Cancer Society Translational Summer Studentship 2022.

Mark is one of two Irish students selected for the Irish Cancer Society Translational studentship. Under the supervision of Dr Malgorzata Krajewska, he aims to harness the potential of mRNA delivery for the treatment of breast cancer.

Mark is a BSc (Hons) Medical and Health Sciences student. He has been actively involved in research, receiving BScMHS TRAIN Award in 2020 for his Alzheimer’s research project in the UCC Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics. Mark recently organised UCC's first Life Sciences Careers Fair. He is currently Co-Chairperson of the UCC Medical Research and Technology Society.

The Translational Summer Studentship offers undergraduate students the opportunity to undertake a translational research project focused on cancer. In the laboratory of Dr Krajewska (School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, UCC) and in collaboration with Dr Kowalski (School of Pharmacy, UCC), Mark's project aims to establish proof of concepts for using mRNA technology to express potential therapeutic targets in a difficult to treat a subset of breast cancers. The results of this project have the potential to significantly impact breast cancer research and could provide a basis for the development of mRNA-based drugs for cancer patients.
