After a two-year gap, a University of California (UC) Davis Summer Abroad program, led by Dr Kellie Dean, returned to UCC from 21 June – 27 July 2022.

Thirty-one students were taking a summer session course, BIS2A, which is a UC Davis module in biological sciences that was taught by Dr Dean. As part of the five-week class, the students also have bi-weekly discussion sessions, and those were led by Aideen McCabe and George Merrin, two PhD students in the School.

In addition to the academic work, the students have weekly trips to places of interest to allow them to experience some of Ireland’s culture. Trips included visits to Blarney, Cobh, Midleton, Kinsale, Co. Clare and an overnight trip to Dublin. Pam Daly in the School organised all excursions, group events and transportation. Mitch Singer, Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics in the College of Biological Sciences at UC Davis, joined the group for two weeks and served as Faculty of Record for the program.

The 2023 program will run from 20 June – 26 July and is advertised now at UC Davis.
