Heritage Week Touch Tank event run by the Lough Hyne research team from School of BEES

28 Aug 2024

Over 250 people attended the annual Heritage Week Touch tank event at Lough Hyne Marine Reserve in West Cork on Saturday 24th August to see a variety of common marine life found in Lough Hyne and around our local coastline.

The event was run by members of the Lough Hyne Research Team including Prof. Rob McAllen, Prof. Ruth Ramsay, Dr Mark Jessopp, Luke Harman and Val Hickey as well as Oscar, Ben and Jake. Thanks are also due to Terri Kearney from the Skibbereen Heritage Centre for organising the event and providing some pictures as well as Saoirse Higgins (@saoirsepapay) for additional photography.

An unexpected highlight from a dive by Rob McAllen and Luke Harman on Whirlpool Cliff to collect some common animals was a specimen of the Gaping File Shell Limaria hians which had not been officially found in Lough Hyne since 1992 (thanks to Dr Julia Nunn for the confirmation) - after photos were taken to confirm the identification, it along with all animals on view at the Touch tanks were returned carefully back to Whirlpool cliff.
