UCC Delegation Attends UN Environment Assembly

Debbie Chapman and Stuart Warner of GEMS/Water Capacity Development Centre meet Mary Robinson at UNEA 2 in Nairobi to brief her on the role of GEMS/Water in the Sustainable Development Goal for water.

May 27th 2016, Dr Debbie Chapman and Mr Stuart Warner from UNEP GEMS/Water Capacity Development Centre, hosted by the ERI and The School of BEES in UCC, met with Mary Robinson at UNEA 2 in Nairobi to brief her on the role of UNEP GEMS/Water in the Sustainable Development Goal for water.

Dr Debbie Chapman and Mr Stuart Warner are currently representing the UNEP GEMS/Water Capacity Development Centre at the second session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-2), taking place from the 23rd – 27th May at the UNEP headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, under the overarching theme ofDelivering on the environmental dimension of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. UNEA-2 will tackle some of the most critical issues currently facing our planet. This is a unique opportunity to represent UNEP GEMS/Water, UCC and Ireland and will enhance our understanding of world water quality monitoring needs in conjunction with hundreds of global decision-makers, environment ministers, scientists, campaigners, industry executives and representatives from the 193 UN member states.

UNEP GEMS/Water is part of a side event (Global water challenges: pathways towards achieving the Agenda 2030) which focuses on establishing the collective contribution of UNEP groups in supporting countries to meet the Sustainable Development Goal targets (SDG 6).  Dr Chapman presented a summary of our work within the programme during this event.
