Geology graduates in demand

Wed, 25 May 2011

geology  Despite a global economic recession, employment prospects for Geology graduates have rarely been better (as showcased in a recent Nature article). The demand for graduates is underpinned by booming commodity process: oil is high and rising, base and rare metal prices are at unprecedented highs as is the demands for coal from the growing economies of China, India and Brasil. As an example, one of our graduates (he has not even passed his exams yet!) has been offered a job in an Austrialian gold mine (no interview - how soon can you start?) on €60,000 per year. This story is multiplied across the class, was the same last year and will be for the foreseeable future.

BEES geologists have been targeted to exploration companies as we offer a classic geology degree, giving a very solid grounding in the specific skills required by industry today that is often missed in other geology programmes. We also have a strong record in industrial placement for our students, with an active employment network established and exploration companies coming to talk to students as part of their recruitment drive. We are also launching a new Master programme in Exploration Field Geology soon with already keen interest from professionals in the field.

There is no better time to study Geology; there is no better place than BEES at UCC.
