St Brigid’s Night Céilí for SONM International Students

13 Feb 2024

International students from the School of Nursing and Midwifery (SONM) enjoyed a great night out on February 1st, St Brigid’s Night, learning new dances and enjoying Irish culture.

The event was supported by the  SONM as part of the initiative for supporting and enhancing the educational experience of international students in the School of Nursing and Midwifery.

Over 80 students, staff and family participated.  All stepped out with gusto and made a memorable evening of music and mirth.

The traditional music was supplied by Uilleann Ceoil whose member, Ann Foley, UCC Library, ably taught the steps to many dances including the Walls of Limerick, the Siege of Ennis, Polkas and Shoe the Donkey.  Some students joined the band on tin whistle and bodhran.

Maria O’Shea, SONM, demonstrated the making of St Brigid crosses in honour of our great saint, giving students an apt memento of the night.

This event was a wonderful opportunity for students to take a break from studies and is seen as an integral event in the college year to socialise outside of their programme group, chill and make some new friends.
