International Year of the Nurse & Midwife: Responding to Crisis

We are delighted to announce our superb keynote speakers for our Nursing and Midwifery Research Conference in Feb 2021. The 20th Annual School of Nursing and Midwifery Research Conference will take place on February 4th 2021, online from Brookfield Health Sciences Complex, UCC. The theme of this conference is: “International Year of the Nurse & Midwife: Responding to Crisis” We have an excellent line up of speakers. The first keynote address will be delivered by Ms Annette Kennedy. Ms Kennedy was elected 28th President of the International Council of Nurses (ICN) in June 2017 after serving four years as Vice President. Annette is a Registered Nurse and Midwife with a BA in Nursing Studies, an MSc in Public Sector Analysis and a Honorary Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI). We look forward to the international perspective that Annette will bring to our conference. The second keynote will be delivered by Professor Soo Downes, Professor of Midwifery Studies at the University of Central Lancashire. Prof Downes’ main research focus is the nature of, and cultures around, normal birth. She is currently working with WHO on a range of maternity care guidelines and has been an author on papers in three Lancet Series. She has published over 160 peer-reviewed papers and has undertaken research using a wide range of qualitative and quantitative methods.  We will also be very privileged to hear from Ireland’s Chief Nursing Officer, Ms Rachel Kenna from the Department of Health. Rachel has responsibility for provision of strategic leadership and expert nursing and midwifery advice to the Department of Health, Government, broader health system and regulatory and professional bodies. She is also responsible for overseeing professional regulation and workforce planning.
