Daniel Corkery: The Hidden Ireland – A Hundred Years On

A conference celebrating one hundred years of The Hidden Ireland by Daniel Corkey (1924-2024). Held in The Imperial Hotel, Cork City on the 20th of April 2024.

First published in 1924, The Hidden Ireland defined a generation of historians and Irish-language scholars. In the decisive and formative period surrounding the emergence of the state, Corkery’s observations on the history of the Irish people, divided between the ‘Big House’ and the ‘Bothán’, provoked a debate on the nature of the Irish soul that still rages today. Now, in 2024, it is time, not to pause and reflect, but to rejuvenate the discussion on national identity, the place of the Irish language and the future of the past.

This conference, organised by University College Cork and Ulster University, is a shared island, generational, response to the context and continued impact of The Hidden Ireland.
