The connection that has been established over the years with the Irish-speaking areas, particularly those in Munster, is a source of satisfaction and pride for the Department of Modern Irish. We view these connections as one of the pillars of the Department's ethos.
The Department has a long-established relationship with the Corca Dhuibhne Gaeltacht, and relations have also been fostered with the Gaeltachtaí of counties Cork and Waterford. Students are acquainted with these areas through the teaching that they receive within the Department, and also through the scholarship-scheme administrated by Ionad na Gaeilge Labhartha.
We value highly the extraordinary literature that was produced in the Gaeltacht areas during the twentieth century. The teaching of this literature forms one of the central platforms of the modules offered by the Department at undergraduate level.
