Treasures of Irish Christianity Volume III: To the Ends of the Earth

The voyage of St Brendan in search of the Promised Land of the Saints, and Friar Simon Fitzsimon’s journey from Ireland to the Holy Land in 1323 represent UCC History staff’s contribution to the recently published Treasures of Irish Christianity Volume III: To the Ends of the Earth (Veritas: Dublin, 2015), edited by Salvador Ryan.

Dr Malgorzata Krasnodebska-D’Aughton discusses the Franciscan Friar Simon’s account of his pilgrimage to Jerusalem, and his delight in the exotic food, clothes, cities and customs encountered along the way. Dr Diarmuid Scully explores the role of the Brendan voyage on the magnificent Hereford world-map (c.1300); St Brendan’s islands are an integral part of the map’s story of salvation at world’s end. The volume’s editor, Salvador Ryan (St Patrick’s College, Maynooth), has assembled a rich, illustrated anthology of short articles centring on the theme of ‘the Irish abroad’ within the Christian tradition. The volume’s theme takes its cue from the 1,400th anniversary of the death of St Columbanus, Ireland’s premier medieval pilgrim and monastic founder on the Continent. The two preceding volumes in the series are: Salvador Ryan and Brendan Leahy (eds.), Treasures of Irish Christianity Volume I: People and Places, Images and Texts ((Veritas: Dublin, 2012); Salvador Ryan and Brendan Leahy (eds.), Treasures of Irish Christianity Volume II: A People of the Word (Veritas: Dublin, 2013).
