Dr Edel Semple to Lead Seminar at Shakespeare Association of America Conference 2021

The Shakespeare Association of America has announced the lineup for its conference in 2021 and our own Dr Edel Semple will be leading a seminar. Dr Semple, along with Dr Ronan Hatfull (University of Warwick), will convene a seminar on Shakespearean biofiction on the stage and screen.
Examining recent TV series such as Upstart Crow, films such as Shakespeare in Love, and theatrical productions such as Hamnet and Something Rotten!, amongst other works, the seminar will evaluate the history and significance of depicting Shakespeare as a character, his writing, and legacy. The seminar will explore the development of the current vogue for and tradition of reimagining this Renaissance author, questioning why artists are drawn to Shakespeare's work and identity, how they use and intertwine the two, and how theatre and screen media overlap or differ in their approach. The Shakespeare Association of America was founded in 1972 and since then holds an annual meeting for scholars from around the world. The 2021 meeting will take place in Austin, Texas, with dozens of seminars, panels, roundtables, screenings, and workshops held over several days.
