Postgraduate Research Day 2010
The Chemistry Department held its first ever Postgraduate Research Day. Prof. Anita Maguire as Chair of the Graduate Studies Committee kindly supplied the following introduction.
Prof. Alan Kelly in his role as Dean of Graduate Studies of UCC officially opened the event. The Graduate Studies Committee of the Department of Chemistry held its inaugural Postgraduate Research Day on Friday 10th September - 13 third year PhD students presented lectures on their work while 19 2nd year PhD students presented posters on their work. This formed part of the annual assessment of PhD students to ensure their research is progressing satisfactorily and facilitate timely completion of their thesis. In addition to presenting their research, each of the 3rd year PhD students presented a work plan and timeline for the remainder of their research.
As Chemistry is a very diverse discipline with researchers located across the campus in Tyndall, Kane, ABCRF and ERI this day provided an excellent opportunity to share the research underway across the department with all of the researchers and PIs in the department and it is envisaged that enhanced collaboration between the different research teams may result.
Chemistry as a discipline has a very long tradition of PhD education within UCC with many of its graduates progressing to leading positions in both the pharma and ICT sectors nationally and internationally. The abstracts for the Postgraduate Research Day will be stored electronically within the department providing a record over time of postgraduate research within Chemistry at UCC.
