SUMMARRY UCC SPORTING SUCCESS AND HIGHLIGHTS SUMMER 2024:

 

Archery:

A number of UCC archers have continued to compete during the summer months in an outdoor intervarsity league.

The results of the DCU outdoor IV3 on 24th July 2024 were as follows:

Stephen Power - RIO (Recurve Intermediate Open) 1ST place, 604 points

Brendan O'Sullivan - RAO (Recurve Advanced Open) 1ST place, 473 points 183 points

Eli Hayes - RBO (Recurve Beginner Open) 4TH Place,

Kevin Liu - CO (Compound Open) 3RD place, 645 points

Alex Sagi - BBO (Barebow Beginner Open) 6TH place, 516 points

Aoibheann Regan - BBF (Barebow Beginner Female) 2ND place, 487 points

 

Olympics:

Athletics:

One of the highlights of the Olympic Games on the track was the performance of the women's 4 x 400m relay team. UCC alumnus Phil Healy was a crucial member of this team who narrowly missed out on a medal finishing in 4th place in a National Record time last Saturday evening.

Rowing:

2 alumni Paul O Donovan & Fintan McCarthy took pride of place by coming home 1st in the Men's Lightweight double scull event, retaining the title they won in Tokyo.

Current student Margaret Cremen along with UCC alumnus Aoife Casey reached the Women's Lightweight double scull where they finished a credible 5th

UCC alumnus Aifric Keogh competed in the Women's Pair and secured an impressive second-place finish in the B Final and finishing eighth overall. 

UCC alumnus Emily Hegarty competed in the women's 4 and they rounded off their Olympics by winning the B final. This finish placed the Women’s Four seventh overall at the Games.

 

Hockey:

UCC students Julia McCarthy & Robyn Murphy were part of the Irish U21 hockey team who competed in the U21 Eurohockey Championships in Spain in July. Following their performances at these championships, the Irish team has now qualified for the U21 World Cup - a fantastic achievement for the Irish squad.

 

Rowing National Champs:

UCC Rowing Club competed at the National Rowing Championships at the National Rowing Centre at Farran in July.

This was one of UCC Rowing's most successful National Championships so far, with 6 national championship titles coming home! UCC RC topped the leaderboard over the weekend, with UCD coming 2nd with 5 wins. UCC has also leapfrogged the overall leaderboard to 10th, with 49 wins through the years.  

In those 6 championships UCC had two first-time wins:

Men's senior 1x (Ronan Byrne) and the Women's novice quad (Danielle Winter, Blaithin Smiddy, Sinead O'Donovan, A. McCarthy & Ella Barrett (C)).

 

 

Rugby:

UCC RFC players Ben O’Connor and Sean Edogbo along with UCC student Danny Sheehan, were part of the Irish U20 squad for the U20 World Championships. Ireland defeated Georgia in the group stages 22-16.

Unfortunately, they were beaten by England in the semifinal on a scoreline of Ireland 20 - 31 England.

 

Taekwondo:

UCC's Sean Óg Lordan competed at the ITF European Championships in Wales, UK, from 18th 21st July. He was accompanied to the event by UCC staff member & club coach JB McCarthy who helped with the officiating at the event

 

GAA All Ireland Hurling:

Earlier in the month Cork senior hurlers took on Clare in the All Ireland Senior Hurling final and unfortunately for the Cork contingent Clare emerged victorious following extra time on a scoreline of Cork 1.34 : 3.29 Clare.

UCC was well represented in this final:

On the Cork panel, current students were Cathal McCarthy (Sarsfields) Digital Humanities & Information, Shane Barrett (Blarney) Masters Accounting, Eoin Downey (Glen Rovers) Arts and his brother Robert (MSC Management Marketing), Robbie Cotter (Blackrock) Food Marketing & Entrepreneurship), Brion Saunderson (Midleton) Arts, Brian Hayes (St Finbarr's) MSC Management Marketing), Ben Cunningham (St Finbarr's) Commerce and Ethan Twomey (St Finbarr's) BIS, Cormac O'Brien (Newtownshandrum) Commerce, Ger Millerick (Fr O'Neill's) Sports Studies & Physical Education.

Alumni involved in the game were Conor & Damien Cahalane (St Finbarr's), Conor Lehane & Tommy O'Connell (Midleton), Shane Kingston (Douglas), Seamus Harnedy (St Ita's), Robbie O'Flynn (Erin's Own), Niall O'Leary (Castlelyons), Eoin Carey (Kilworth), Eoin Roche (Bride Rovers), Daire O'Leary (Watergrasshill), Jack O'Connor (Sarsfields), Darragh Fitzgibbon (Charleville), Mark Coleman (Blarney) and the captain of Cork Sean O'Donoghue (Inniscarra).

The sole Clare man pitted against all these Cork lads was graduate Shane O'Donnell of Eire Og Ennis.

 

GAA All Ireland Camogie Finals:

Pride of place today goes to the Cork Intermediate & Senior Camogie Teams who were crowned All Ireland Champions in Croke Park yesterday.

UCC was well represented in both Cork squads with current students & alumni.

Final scorelines read:

Senior Final: Cork 1.16 : 0.16 Galway

Intermediate Final: Cork 1.11 : 1.10 Kilkenny

In addition to these 2 games: The Junior final saw Tipperary play Laois and students and sisters Ana and Lily Fahie from Cashel King Cormacs lined for the Premier County who were narrowly beaten by Laois.

All Ireland Senior Ladies Gaelic Football Final:

The previous weekend Kerry played Galway in the senior final and UCC had four students on the Kerry panel and a number of alumni and came out victorious:

 Students representing Kerry were Mary O'Connell (Chemistry) , Katie Brosnan (Nursing), Amy Harrington (Medicine) and Jessica Gill (Government and Political Science).

Graduates were Cait Lynch and Louise Ni Mhuircheartaigh.

 

Women’s Soccer:

Congratulations to Eva Mangan for being called up to the Republic of Ireland Senior Women's Team. She was in the squad for the match against England and for the squads’ historic victory over France.
