Establishment of UCC's New Governing Authority
As UCC continues to work towards its vision for 2028, we are very pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Sean O’Driscoll as Chair of our Governing Authority (formerly Governing Body) until 2027. A Commerce graduate of UCC and 2004 UCC Alumni Achievement Award recipient, Mr O’Driscoll is the former Chair and Chief Executive of the Glen Dimplex Group and a former Partner in KPMG.
The principle of good governance in Irish universities is well established and the functions of the Governing Authority are detailed in the Code of Governance, the Universities Act 1997 and the subsequent HEA Act 2022 . The Governing Authority is charged with providing strategic direction for the University; ensuring that systems are in place to deliver its strategic objectives; promoting the success and reputation of the University; managing the financial affairs of the University; and accounting to the HEA. UCC’s new Governing Authority structure comprises three members from the student body, six professional and academic staff and nine external members, with three members nominated by the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Innovation, Research and Science, and will work to support the success of this University and the delivery of our strategic objectives.
I wish to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to our previous Governing Body members, individually and collectively, and in particular to the Committee Chairs and the Governing Body Chair, Dr Catherine Day. We are proud to have had your stewardship during one of the most difficult periods in our history. On 11 November Dr Catherine Day was awarded the inaugural NUI Whitaker medal for her outstanding public service contribution and leadership for higher education and public service.
Sean brings such a tremendous depth of experience to this role, particularly in that nexus between public institutions and national policy. I look forward to working with Sean and all the Governors as we implement our ambitious strategic plan.
